Complaining about the climate

Almost everyone knows that Canada has a rather harsh climate. In fact, only a relatively small part of the country on the southern west coast escapes this fate.

Coping with severe cold and heavy snowfall requires considerable adaptability. What's more, and something many people don't really anticipate, is a sometimes stifling summer with temperatures that make extensive air conditioning a given.

In gigantic Canada you can experience just about anything: extreme drought, high humidity, excessive rainfall, strong winds – almost all weather extremes are known in Canada.

Not everyone can really get used to that.

Je moet best taai zijn om je aan het Canadese klimaat te kunnen aanpassen.

Ultimately, anything is possible, you might even be able to adapt to the most aggressive weather.

Even in heavy snowfall, life goes on. The snowplow makes short work of the misery. Cars with snow tires adjust their speed. It takes some getting used to, but eventually, you'll get used to it.

Less pleasant is that the power often goes out during extreme weather conditions. If, on top of that, the water supply stops working and the phone stops working, it becomes quite a nuisance.

A common complaint is that the country is not sufficiently prepared for climate change. It feels like it's lagging behind the facts.

Occasionally it rains too much and then a lot of flooding occurs because the facilities are not adequate.

However, it also happens that it doesn't rain for long periods, and then all the reservoirs dry up. Perhaps there is enough water in Canada, but it's just not in the right place. Almost nothing is done about these kinds of problems. And if anything is done at all, it's always only after the damage has been done.

Other natural problems include frequent forest fires and insect infestations. Little is being done to prevent these. Coastal erosion is widespread, and nothing is being done about that either.

Adapting to the climate

You can adapt to the climate to some extent, if you so choose. The government can also respond, but that happens only sporadically in Canada because it costs money.

The infrastructure that could handle the current climate is lacking. And there's absolutely no preparation for the potential climate change that's coming. We'll see!
